Weight Limits and Safety Risks of Non-Stud TV Mounting
Mounting a television directly to drywall without securing it to structural studs carries inherent risks. Drywall is composed of a pressed gypsum core wrapped in paper; it has moderate shear strength but very low tensile strength. Articulating or full-motion TV mounts act as levers, multiplying the pull-out force on the wall. Never mount an articulating TV bracket to drywall alone. However, flat or tilt mounts for lightweight TVs (under 50 lbs) can be mounted safely using professional drywall anchors [1].
Types of Drywall Anchors: Toggle Bolts, Molly Bolts, and Anchoring Plates
Standard plastic expansion plugs are unsafe for TV mounts. Instead, use steel hollow-wall anchors. Toggle bolts (or snap toggles) are the gold standard. They feature a metal channel that flips open behind the drywall, distributing the weight across a large surface area. Molly bolts expand a metal sleeve behind the drywall and are also highly secure. For larger TVs, heavy-duty mounting plates can span the gap between anchors, distributing the weight evenly.
Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Snap Toggles for a TV Mount
First, align the TV wall bracket and mark the anchor holes using a level. Drill a 1/2-inch hole at each mark (the size required for standard 3/16-inch snap toggles). Insert the metal channel of the snap toggle through the hole. Pull the straps tight so the channel rests flat against the inside of the wall, and slide the plastic flange snug against the drywall face. Snap off the plastic straps. Align your bracket and drive the machine bolts directly into the threaded channels [2].
When You Must Stop and Find a Stud (Articulating Mounts & Heavy TVs)
If your television weighs over 60 pounds, or if you are installing a full-motion mount that extends more than 6 inches from the wall, you must stop and locate structural studs. The leverage force of an extended TV will tear toggle bolts straight through drywall, resulting in costly damage to your home and electronics. If the TV bracket cannot span the distance to your studs, mount a 3/4-inch plywood backer board to the studs first, and bolt the TV mount to the plywood.
